OHS Committee



The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre OHS Committee established a Committee Constitution in August 2004. As stated in the Constitution, the aim of the OHS Committee is “to promote and ensure, through the process of joint consultation, the health and welfare of all employees, students and visitors in the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre.”

The committee consists of six members: four employee representatives and two employer representatives. The term of office for each elected committee member is two years. The current Committee membership is detailed below:

The functions of the OHS Committee (as stipulated in the OHS Act and Consultation Code of Practice) are as follows:
  • Keep under review the measures taken to ensure the health, safety and welfare of persons in the School/Centre
  • Investigate any matter that may be a risk to the health and safety of persons in the School/Centre
  • Attempt to resolve any OHS matter
  • To conduct workplace inspections
  • Make a request to accompany a WorkCover inspector as an observer on an inspection
  • To be an observer during a formal report by a WorkCover inspector
  • To accompany an employee at their request during any interview by the employer on any OHS issue
  • To be an observer during any formal in-house investigation of a reportable WorkCover incident
  • To assist in the development of arrangements for recording workplace hazards and incidents
  • To make recommendations on the training of members of the Committee and employees in relation to OHS.

Faculty OHS Coordinator

The duties of the Faculty OHS Coordinator are as follows:
  • Provide OHS advice in terms of University procedures and legislative requirements
  • Monitor the implementation of the UNSW OHSMS
  • Advise University management of WorkCover reportable incidents
  • Undertake OHS training relevant to the activities of the Faculty
  • Ensure OHS information is disseminated to the Faculty consultative system
  • Participate in relevant OHS committee meetings
  • Ensure OHS audits are undertaken
  • Contribute to the development of UNSW OHS Policy, Procedures and Guidelines

OHS Responsibilities of All Staff Students, Contractors and Visitors



As stipulated in the OHS Act, OHS Regulation and UNSW Generic competency A, all staff, students, contractors and visitors:
  • Must cooperate with UNSW in regards to OHS matters.
  • Must take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others at work.
  • Must not interfere with anything provided for health, safety and welfare.
  • Must not interfere with the giving or receiving of aid in respect to illness or injury.
  • Must not interfere with anything in place to control OHS risks.
  • Must follow workplace procedures for hazard identification and risk control.
  • Must raise identified OHS issues with designated persons and take part in OHS consultative arrangements.
  • Must not disrupt the workplace by creating health or safety fears.

OHS Responsibilities of staff with a supervisory role


  • As stipulated in the UNSW Generic OHS Competencies B, all staff with a supervisory role must:
  • Provide information about OHS and OHS policy, procedures and guidelines within the workgroup.
  • Implement and monitor UNSW OHS consultation procedures within the workgroup.
  • Implement and monitor UNSW procedures for emergency, incident investigation, reporting and control within the workgroup.
  • Identify and document OHS competencies for the workgroup.
  • Undertake training needs analysis and implement a training plan within the workgroup.
  • Implement and monitor established procedures for the identification, elimination or control of hazards and risks in the workgroup.
  • Implement and monitor UNSW OHS record keeping requirements for the workgroup.
