The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has announced the appointment of NDARC’s deputy director, Associate Professor Anthony Shakeshaft, to the NHMRC Council. A/Prof Shakeshaft will take up a three year term and, with his fellow Council members, provide expert advice to NHMRC CEO Warwick Andersen.

“It is a great honour to be invited to contribute to the NHMRC Council,” A/Prof Shakeshaft said. “I am particularly interested in exploring how Council might provide strong leadership to help increase the impact of research in improving the quality of life for all Australians. There are under-utilised opportunities to integrate research more effectively into routine health services and public policy initiatives, and innovative ways to involve communities and individuals in research that is of direct relevance to them. The challenges will be significant, but they are worth taking up.”

In other appointments Professor Maree Teesson was named a member of the NHMRC Health Care Committee. In this role Professor Teesson will advise the NHMRC Council on clinical matters in hospital and primary care settings.

NDARC congratulates both A/Prof Shakeshaft and Professor Teesson on their appointments.
