Congratulations to Dr Katherine Mills who has been awarded a prestigious NSW Young Tall Poppies Science Award, in recognition of her research into comorbid substance use and mental health disorders.

In the six years since completing her PhD in 2006 Dr Mills has developed a national and international reputation for her work developing and evaluating interventions for the treatment of  co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, with a particular focus on comorbid post traumatic stress disorder. Her work has been published in leading international journals including the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Her nomination described her as “an outstanding young academic. Despite the early stage of her career she has earned herself a national and international reputation for excellence and innovation.”

Dr Mills is currently playing a lead role in establishing a newly funded NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use, with chief investigator Professor Maree Teesson

Dr Mills received her award last night (October 25) at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney.
