Session Four: Illicit drugs: Research and clinical responses

The fourth session was focused on bringing researchers and clinicians together to discuss current treatment, clinical trials, and studies into illicit drug use.

The session included presentations on the latest trends in illicit drug use, including NDARC's clinical trials, with a particular focus on opioids and methamphetamine.

Dr Fadil Pedic

Dr Fadil Pedic is Manager, Strategic Research & Evaluation, Centre for Alcohol and Other Drugs at the NSW Ministry of Health.

Fadil has worked at both Federal and NSW Health departments, founded two research agencies, and headed up the Government and Social Research divisions at two other agencies.  

His research is centred around behaviour change, social issues and health promotion on topics as varied as: drug use in prisons, children’s obesity, tobacco cessation, apprenticeship retention, and cyber-safety.

Dr James Bell

James Bell, BA, MBBS, FRACP, FAChAM, MD, is a physician who has worked in Addiction Medicine in the UK and Australia. He developed training programs for doctors in Australia and the UK. He was a leading figure in establishing the Chapter of Addiction Medicine and having Addiction Medicine recognised as a speciality in Australia. His major research interest is the treatment of addictive disorders, and he has published extensively on treatment of opioid dependence.

Professor Michael Farrell

Professor Michael Farrell FRCP FRCPsych is the Director of NDARC since 2011. Before that he was Professor of Addiction Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College London. His extensive research interests include treatment evaluation, national and international drug policy.  He is the Chair of the International Consortium on Health Outcome Monitoring Substance Use working Group and Editor of the Cochrane Drug and Alcohol Group. He has a long-standing interest in drug dependence, comorbidity and drugs in the wider criminal justice system. He has been a member of the WHO Expert Committee on Drug and Alcohol Dependence since 1995.

Dr Nadine Ezard

Conjoint Professor Nadine Ezard is the Director of NCCRED. Nadine is also the Clinical Director of the Alcohol and Drug Service at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney Australia home to one of NSW’s first specialist stimulant treatment programs.

Associate Professor Rebecca McKetin

A/Prof Rebecca McKetin (BSc(Psychol)Hons. PhD) leads a program of research into stimulant use epidemiology and interventions at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, UNSW. Her current research involves the online delivery of psychological help for people who use stimulants (www.breakingtheice.org), the trialling of new pharmacotherapy options for methamphetamine dependence (www.nicetrial.info; www.limastudy.info) and the development of novel responses to methamphetamine use in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities (http://nimac.org.au/).
