Congratulations to NDARC researchers Louise Birrell, Katrina Prior and Zoe Tonks, and new PhD candidate Tonelle Handley, who have all been awarded 2014 Australian Rotary Health PhD scholarships.

The scholarships, each valued at $18,000, will enable the four researchers to further their investigations into comorbid mental health and substance use in Australia. The research will be conducted at the Centre for Research Excellence in Mental Health and Substance Use, based at NDARC.

Louise Birrell, awarded a David Henning Memorial PhD Scholarship, will focus on mental health and substance use comorbidities in young Australians.

Zoe Tonks, awarded an Ian Scott PhD Scholarship, will develop and evaluate a combined parent and student internet-delivered substance use prevention program for Australian adolescents.

Katrina Prior, also awarded an Ian Scott PhD Scholarship, will research the relationship between social phobia, depression and substance use disorders.

Finally Tonelle Handley, awarded the newly created Geoff Betts Postdoctoral Fellowship, will focus on suicide prevention in young Australians.

The receipt of the 2014 scholarships builds on success in previous funding rounds. Current NDARC PhD candidates Monika Wadolowski and Clare McCormack are among those who have received a Rotary scholarship in earlier years.
