Mariane Franca is an Adjunct Lecture in the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Sydney. She joined the NDARC in February 2020 researching the use of mental health services in Brazil and internationally using data from the World Health Organisation’s World Mental Health Survey under Professor Louisa Degenhardt and Maria Carmen Viana.

Mariane holds her PhD in Public Health in 2022 after complete a Master of Science in the same field in 2014, and a Bachelor in Social Work at UFES in 2005. Her studies examined the main gaps in treatment coverage; treatment delay after the first onset of common mental health disorder; and the effective treatment coverage specifically among individuals with major depressive disorders, identifying critical quality gaps for user adherence, and pharmacological and psychotherapeutic care. She also worked in a model to estimate work loss (absenteeism and presenteeism), and its economic costs due to common mental disorders and substance use disorders.
