Mariane Franca is an Adjunct Lecture in the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Sydney. She is a Doctoral Student and completed a Master of Science with honours in Public Health at the Federal University of Espirito Santo, Brazil in 2012. Her thesis examined the impact of mental and substances use disorders on work, specifically in employment status, mental health services, work loss (absenteeism and presenteeism), and economic costs analysing data from World Mental Health Study in Sao Paulo. She also is part of the World Mental Health Survey Initiative (WMHS) a project of assessment, classification, and epidemiology group at the World Health Organization coordinating the implementation and analysis of general population epidemiologic surveys of mental, substance use, and behavioural disorders in countries in all WHO Regions, specifically in Sao Paulo metropolitan area, Brazil.

Mariane Franca joined the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at UNSW Sydney in February 2020 as an Adjunct Lecture. Her prime focus is understanding the effects of different impacts of mental and substance use disorders to use of service, barriers and reason for not seeking treatment, and economic costs associated.

Her current research is looking at: a) structural and attitudinal barriers to treatment initiation among individuals with a mental disorder, specifically use, abuse and dependence of alcohol and drugs, as well as demographic and clinical predictors of treatment dropout; b) prevalence of service utilization, the adequacy of treatment for specific mental disorders, and sociodemographic correlates of service utilization; c) effects of different impacts of mental and substance use disorders to health services, income loss, treatment costs, family burden, and their economics costs.
