On ice: new medications, online help and better evidence

Associate Professor Rebecca McKetin from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) at UNSW Sydney presented at the 2019 NDARC Seminar Series on Thurs, 22 August 2019.

Methamphetamine use is a growing global health concern. Associate Professor Rebecca McKetin has recently returned to NDARC, and provided an overview of her current research on methamphetamine use. This includes clinical trials of novel pharmacotherapies for methamphetamine dependence, online help for people using the drug, supporting the development of novel responses to methamphetamine use in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and a systematic review on the mental health impacts of methamphetamine use.

Associate Professor Rebecca McKetin (BSc(Psychol)Hons. PhD) is based at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, UNSW. Her background is in psychology and public health and her interests include substance use and co-occurring health conditions, with a particular focus on methamphetamine use. Her current research includes trialling new medications for methamphetamine dependence (www.nicetrial.info; www.limastudy.info), developing online self-help tools for people who use the drug (www.breakingtheice.org.au), and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to develop community-led responses to methamphetamine use (www.nimac.org.au). She has also done extensive work in understanding the epidemiology and mental health consequences of use. She has published over 100 journal papers and is a senior editor for Addiction
