The Drug Trends team at NDARC presented at the 2019 NDARC Seminar Series on Thurs, 12 September 2019.
Drug Trends is a program of research which triangulates data from various sources to identify emerging problems in illicit drug use and harms in Australia. This seminar provided brief snapshots of recent key findings from this program of work.
Toni Karlsson: Methamphetamine use, forms and routes of administration among people who use drugs in Australia
Some research has suggested that methamphetamine consumers may consider smoking to be a safer route of administration than injecting. This presentation explored findings on use of methamphetamine and routes of administration among people who inject drugs and among people who use ecstasy and related drugs.
Julia Uporova: Driving under the influence of illicit drugs/alcohol among people who use drugs in Australia
Driving under the influence of illicit drugs and/or alcohol is a serious road safety concern. This presentation reported trends in driving after using alcohol and illicit drugs among people who regularly inject drugs and people who regularly use ecstasy and other illicit stimulants.
Daisy Gibbs: HCV cascade of care amongst people who inject drugs in Australia
The HCV cascade has improved our understanding of the continuum of HCV care. This presentation summarised recent findings on engagement in the HCV cascade of care among people who inject drugs in Australia.
Anant Mathur: Harm reduction on "darknet" drug marketplaces?
Availability of illicit drugs on the darknet has been posed as increasing risk of drug-related harms. This presentation discussed possible mechanisms for harm reduction via the darknet, including availability ofharm reduction products and discussion forums.
Rosie Swanton: Ecstasy dependence, harm reduction and risk behaviours
Understanding risk and harm reduction behaviours among people at risk of ecstasy dependence may help us target interventions more effectively. This presentation explored potential ecstasy dependence among people who use illicit stimulants in Australia and associated risk and help-seeking behaviour.
Team Overview:
The Drug Trends team are responsible for running Australia’s illicit drug monitoring system. This includes coordinating a number of ongoing projects, including the Illicit Drug Reporting System (IDRS), the Ecstasy and Related Drugs Reporting System (EDRS), the National Illicit Drug Indicators Project (NIDIP) and the Drugs and New Technologies (DNeT) project
