Josephine Ricciuti is a qualitative researcher, working as a research assistant for 'The Quit Smoking Study' head by Dr Ryan Courtney at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, at the University of New South Wales.

Josephine holds a Masters of Research in Anthropology from Macquarie University, and has conducted first-hand qualitative research on the contested neurological disorder, "Body Integrity Identity Disorder" through interviews and digital observation. Josephine remains curious about current research frontiers and topics, and is especially passionate about:

  • Critical Medical Anthropology and the understanding the Social Determinants of Disease
  • Mental Health and Digital Health Tools
  • Lived Experiences and Phenomenological Research Methodologies
  • Embodiment, Enculturation and Existential Anthropology
  • The Australian Death Care Industry, Modern Death and Dying, Death Doulas, Palliative Care and the long term impact of COVID-19 
  • Neurological Disorders, Disability, Chronicity and Contested/Invisible Illnesses 
  • Psychological Anthropology (Grief, Joy, Trauma, Subjectivity and Mental Health)
  • Neuroanthropology
  • Addiction and Recovery
  • Bioethics, Bodily Autonomy and Consent
  • Suicide Prevention 
  • Indigenous health and wellbeing, as well as decolonising medical knowledges
  • Altered States of Consciousness, Near Death Experiences (NDEs) and Contemporary Religion

Josephine is also an experienced academic content tutor and cross-cultural teacher, working on two-way learning initiatives with the Wuyagiba Study Hub from Ngukurr in South-East Arnham Land through Walanga Muru at Macquarie University. She is currently completing a CERT IV in Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) from TAFE NSW.
